“Take a Breath” Playgroup, St Luke's Torquay

A playgroup with a difference.

From a shared idea and small beginnings over 10 years ago, in association with the Torquay Community House, the Take Breath Playgroup is now well known through the community. At present we have 25 families registered.

From the beginning we aimed for this to be a time of respite for the mothers who are able to socialise with other mothers (and occasionally fathers and grandparents) while the children are cared for by women from the church who call themselves the ‘Grannies’.

Pancakes at Playgroup, Monday 27 February.

The Take a Breath Group activity, the Monday before Lent began, was making pancakes. Here are some photographs and a short video of the fun.

Many of our varied and interesting group of mums (and dads) have challenges from life threatening illnesses of their children to new babies, to relationship and family pressures. Very few of them have extended family close by; most are overseas or interstate. It is a privilege when they share so much with us. They tell us we mean a great deal to them. We have mums whose children are now at kinder, drop by to say ‘hello’ and we keep in touch by inviting our ‘graduates’ to our playground picnic at Christmas time.

Cookbook
A noteworthy achievement has been the recipe book ‘Cook Good Food For a Good Cause’ produced by one of our mums. Contributions were received from many parts of our community as well as the church family and playgroup. The sales of this great little book have now raised about $5000.

We are very appreciative of the men’s work group which has constructed fences and gates which give us a secure closed area for the children. It’s wonderful to have the veranda of the OP shop available and small boys love playing with cars there.

The Vicar conducts a short service in the church each month which is attended by more than half of our group of mums. They enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and it makes the grannies wish we could encourage these families to come to church. Several of the children have been baptised one of our mums was baptised and confirmed.

Monday mornings are busy and happy and many friendships have been made both within and across age groups.

"Take a Breath" meets weekly on Monday mornings at 10 am during school term.
